Dear Friends and Colleagues,

7.14.2010 As you may know by now, my friend and colleague Jared Smith was involved in an accident July 4th. He sustained a C7 Burst fracture that has resulted in a C7 Quadriplegia. He has now been transferred to Santa Clara Valley's Spinal Cord Injury Rehab Center. He will likely spend three weeks there and return to Redding to continue his healing and rehab. His wife Jennifer will take a leave of absence from work to stay with him in Santa Clara during this process. His two boys, Connor, six and Caden, four, will be spending time with friends and family in Redding.

I have had many questions regarding what can be done to help. Obviously your prayers and thoughts are vital during this time, but others have asked what they individually can do and if they can contribute to the family. This letter is to answer some questions in this regard.

As you can imagine, he and his family will be under not only emotional stress, but financial stress as well. To assist his family, a Trust has been established at North Valley Bank, The Jared Smith Trust. All donations will be used in whole by the Smith's to allow Jared to recover and adapt to his new challenges he and his family will face.

It is my hope that Jared will one day return to be a part of my practice and continue his care he gives to our community, not only in Spine but also at Mercy Medical Center's Emergency Department. I don't know if and when this will occur, so any help will be put to good use.

The overwhelming support he has already received makes me proud to be part of this community. I know Jared and his family feel the same way.

Sincerely,

Brad Jones, M.D.
